Clear Angle Studios has launched a modular volumetric capture rig aimed at dynamic Gaussian splat performances, as reported by Post Magazine. The rig uses 40 high-speed machine-vision cameras with 6K sensors shooting 12-bit at 60 frames per second, paired with 450 individually programmable light nodes and up to 120 lighting configurations. Its scalable capture volume reaches 2.5 cubic meters with 360-degree coverage, and it is based at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. The dynamic Gaussian splat capture preserves original performance behavior and natural lighting while cutting manual post steps, and Union VFX partnered on re-lighting solutions for the splat assets.
The real signal is the relight, not the camera count
It is easy to fixate on 40 cameras and 6K sensors. The more important number is 450 programmable light nodes and 120 lighting configurations, because that is what makes the capture reusable. A volumetric performance that records natural lighting but can still be relit afterward is no longer a fixed take. It becomes an asset you can drop into a new scene and match to that scene's light, which is the difference between footage you shot and a prop you own.
That reframes where the cost sits. The heavy lifting moves from re-shooting or hand-fixing performances in post toward capturing once and re-lighting many times.
